Dr. Diskin attended college and medical school at the University of Miami. He completed his internship residency in Emergency Medicine at Los Angeles County Medical Center/University of Southern California. He was first Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 1982. He has been an Examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine since his appointment in 1985, participating in giving the oral portion of the examination.
Dr. Diskin is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), Past President of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians (FCEP), Past Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH), the primary teaching hospital for the University of Miami School of Medicine and Past Chair of the Section on Cruise Ship and Maritime Medicine of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Diskin was President of Emergency Medicine Specialists, LLC providing staffing for up to eight emergency departments through 2005 with 60+ physician and practitioner colleagues.
Dr. Diskin has served as a physician on board ships since the 1980's and has been a consultant to Carnival Cruise Lines since 1990, as well as their Medical Director through 2008. He co-developed the International Academy of Cruise Ship Medicine (ICSM). This is a full week of conferences and work shops on issues related to managing medical problems in the maritime environment and attracts over 100 healthcare professionals from around the world. Dr. Diskin has created a similar conference at Royal Caribbean called the International Academy of Cruise Ship Medicine (IACSM). In his role as Chief Medical Officer, he is responsible for such activities as reviewing the credentials of the ship’s physicians and nurses, determining which medications to stock, developing medical, evacuation and disaster management policies and advising the ships' physicians as needed, while respecting the fact that all medical decisions are, and must be, made by the ship’s physician. He is also responsible for the management of crew medical care on the ships and in their home countries, all Public Health issues and the Care Team which provide support to ill and injured guests, crew and their families.
His past experience as an Aviation Medical Examiner for the FAA, a Medical Review Officer for drug testing programs and head of an Occupational Medicine Department have been in asset in meeting his responsibilities to the cruise lines.
Dr. Diskin is an avid scuba diver, skier and golfer. He, his wife Simi and their son Oliver, reside in Miami Beach, Florida
